The Rainbow Platinum Trophy Challenge

Trophy hunters are no strangers to challenges. Whether self-imposed or dictated by video game developers, we tend to rise to meet them regardless of how badly the odds are stacked against us. That’s why even incredibly difficult games like Crypt of the Necrodancer still have a handful of players with its platinum trophy unlocked.

Not all challenges need to reach such heights to be worth doing. Why not take on something more whimsical for a change of pace? Many trophy hunters are likely already familiar with the alphabet challenge, but what about the rainbow challenge?

To complete this challenge, you must unlock a platinum trophy for every color in a rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. You can also more of your favorite colors for a more complete spectrum. For the most authentic experience, consider what emotions each color evokes and try to match the best game to that color.

In this article, I point out a few games for each color of the rainbow to help inspire your picks for the rainbow platinum trophy challenge. I also detail what each color represents and how my selections fit the overall theme. Although story details can provide a lot of clues about the mood of a game, important spoilers for titles on this list will not be discussed.

Red

Red is a primary color that represents a wide variety of intense emotions. It speaks to love, lust, or anger depending on the context. Whenever things get fierce or impassioned, red is the color that comes to mind.

Pictured above are 8 PlayStation games’ platinum trophy icons that are red by design and exemplify the color’s deeper meaning. If you have a keen eye, you may even begin to see a trend in the plotline of these titles!

Control

Control sees redheaded FBC director Jesse Faden interacting with paranormal phenomena. In this esteemed role, it is her responsibility to find a way to contain these unusual entities in service to the public. More importantly, however, Jesse follows through in her new position hoping that she will discover clues pointing toward her lost brother.

Feelings of tempered indignation toward her brother’s kidnappers and a bond deep enough that she’d delve headfirst into danger for his sake; Control has intense emotions in spades. The platinum trophy icon is a straightforward medal that showcases the inverted Black Pyramid often used to represent an enemy faction in-game.

Days Gone

Days Gone is a survival horror title that ratchets up the familiar zombie apocalypse trope by way of enormous fleet-footed hordes. Deacon, a proud member of the Mongrels Motorcycle Club, has been surviving alongside his friend and fellow biker, Boozer. However, he can’t stop thinking about his late wife, whose life was claimed in the early days of the outbreak. Deacon is quick to rage and solves many of his problems with violence.

The platinum trophy image for Days Gone is an apt design in more ways than one. Earning the platinum trophy and all DLC trophies for the title is no easy feat. You need to earn all gold medals in the Challenge Mode, beat the game on Survival II difficulty, and fully explore the game’s open world. The Challenge Mode is incredibly difficult and requires a high level of skill to complete.

There is also an in-universe explanation for the design of the platinum trophy icon; “1 percenter” patches are worn by motorcycle clubs that have publically proclaimed their outlaw status. These patches were created in response to the American Motorcycle Association famously stating that 99% of motorcyclists are law-abiding citizens. What could be more emotionally charged than declaring oneself a rebel?

DMC – Devil May Cry

If you’ve ever played a Devil May Cry game, you know that they are high-intensity experiences with little levity. The 2013 reboot of the series was no different. You play as Dante, a young man borne from the unity of an angel and a demon. As a powerful Nephilim, he participates in many gory battles against supernatural beings.

The title does not shy away from mature themes; Rather, it embraces every crude and violent detail to an occasionally revulsive degree. The music and environments also match the title’s high energy, often leaving the player implicitly on edge. Story beats regarding Dante’s family and newfound comrades also render him angry and vengeful.

The platinum trophy icon for DMC – Devil May Cry includes branching lightning strikes, indicating the charged nature of the game’s plot and action-packed combat. The design in the center is Dante’s necklace, an heirloom originally belonging to his mother. Yet again, the platinum trophy icon exudes complexity of emotion.

Inscryption

Inscryption is a deck-building roguelike game that took the gaming world by storm in 2021. The title hosts an uncanny atmosphere in which you are trapped in a cabin with a strange man who insists you play a card game with him. Soon, you realize that the stakes are much higher than a simple friendly competition would suggest.

Inscryption’s platinum trophy design is a striking floppy disk. These were the primary method of computer storage back in the day, boasting an average of 1.44 MB in data capacity. To put its scale into perspective, the 2013 DMC reboot has an approximate 9 GB file size—6,250x bigger than the size of a floppy disk!

More recently, floppy disks have been used as an indicator for saving digital files. This is ironic in Inscryption’s case since much of your progress is not preserved between runs. I’d argue that the red shade of the floppy disk in the platinum trophy icon hints at the unstable nature of the title’s save states, and how there is more to the game than meets the eye.

Resident Evil Revelations 2

Resident Evil Revelations 2 follows the story of a man in search of his alienated daughter who is trapped on a deserted island full of monsters. Barry is angry at the mastermind responsible for putting his precious daughter Moira in danger and will stop at nothing to ensure her safe return.

Ultimately, the game is about familial love and reconciliation. Claire Redfield also stars in this title, although she resolves relationship conflicts of a different nature. Claire “Red”-field’s hair matches her iconic name, too; what could be a better inclusion for the reddish hues in a rainbow?

The platinum trophy image is the unsettling eye of an Afflicted, the primary enemy type in Resident Evil Revelations 2. It strikes fear in the viewer with its deep shades of red. Conveniently, those trapped on the island wear bracelets that indicate their emotional state based on their color. A red bracelet means its bearer is overwhelmed with fear.

Root Film

Between ghoulish survival horror and fast-paced action titles, Root Film is a standout pick for our red category. It is a visual novel that tells the story of a young film director trying to create a breakout mystery drama series. Just when things were looking up for Rintaro, it turns out that a real murder has occurred while filming!

The game plays with your perception of reality, resulting in uncanny reveals and thought-provoking exercises. The platinum trophy icon includes film reels in the background, painted a stark red as if they’ve been steeped in blood.

Signalis

Signalis is a survival horror game that quickly sets the stage for philosophical debate. You play as a Replika, a human-like clone, as she explores a mining facility. Along the way, you will explore themes regarding what constitutes one’s identity, the key to fostering strong relationships, and the virtue of persevering through seemingly insurmountable odds.

The dark and depressing atmosphere of the title is represented in the muted red tones frequently used in the environment.

The platinum trophy logo, like Inscryption, is yet another red floppy disk. In this case, the color signifies instability and aggressive dealings, the details of which you will have to play to find out.

Silent Hill 2 (Remake)

Like several other games listed above, Silent Hill 2 (2024) is a horror game in which you search for a lost loved one. James Sunderland recently received a letter addressed from his late wife, Mary, requesting that he meet her in their “special place” in Silent Hill. Despite knowing that she has long since passed on, James is determined to discover the truth behind the letter.

Red is an iconic color for the title, as beneath its foggy exterior lies a bloodstained secret. The platinum trophy icon appears to be either bathroom tiles or a windowpane, clearly dirty and in disrepair. The condition of the furnishings is an interesting detail that provides further narrative insight once you’ve uncovered the mystery of Silent Hill.

Orange

Orange is a vibrant color representative of youthful optimism, boisterous energy, and freedom. It takes red’s intensity and lightens its mood. With many video games’ target demographics leaning younger, there is no shortage of applicable titles that accurately match orange themes.

A Hat in Time

A Hat in Time is a fast-paced and cutesy 3D platformer that keeps you on your toes. Misjudge a jump, and you might fall into a pool of lava or a bottomless pit! A Hat in Time follows the story of Hat Kid, a young girl who gets wrapped up in all kinds of mischief. The game is full of good-natured humor and family-friendly plotlines. What could be sillier than a villain named Mustache Girl?

The platinum trophy icon includes an orange background and many badges. These have an in-game use as they add optional modifiers to your gameplay experience. Whether they help or hinder you, you have the freedom to equip them as you see fit.

Bugsnax

Bugsnax is a unique take on the monster-catching genre. In this title, you must use a wide variety of tools to capture food-like beasts. Bugsnax allows you to explore its various biomes with a great amount of freedom, and there are often many different ways you can capture each creature.

Bugsnax’s game design is colorful and encourages an air of whimsy. Its platinum trophy icon with the iconic Bugsnax googly eyes and an orange background is incredibly fitting of the game’s tone.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III

Call of Duty: Black Ops III represented a shift in the Call of Duty franchise. This iteration in the series was one of the first titles to include enhanced movement options such as wall-running and thrust jumps. This newfound freedom was a welcome addition to the familiar first-person shooter series. Many fans view this title as one of the best for this reason, often looking back on it with a positive lens.

The platinum trophy image includes a metallic trophy in a futuristic setting. Given early story events in the game’s campaign, the trophy being adorned with metallic plating is clever.

Mortal Kombat X

Mortal Kombat X might be a surprising inclusion in this section. After all, Mortal Kombat is a very mature fighting game series often touting gratuitous amounts of violence and gore.

Setting aside the youthful catch-all orange theme, Mortal Kombat fits the bill in other ways. The game is fast-paced and high-energy. Rounds are decided quickly and often lead to extreme executions. There is also a lot of freedom in what character you choose to play.

This freedom in gameplay experiences is a stark contrast to the image of the fighter shown in chains in the platinum trophy icon. That said, the slight orange tint could represent potential energy, the likes of which when expelled could easily break binding chains. Knowing how powerful the cast of Mortal Kombat tends to be, I would consider these restraints to be highly temporary.

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2

Naruto is an anime icon that is practically orange personified. An up-and-coming ninja in the Hidden Leaf Village, he is young, loud, and wears orange all over. Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 covers the initial story arcs of the Shippuden anime, up to and including Pain’s Assault on the Hidden Leaf Village.

Unlike the original Storm game, this one introduced the ability to traverse between the various ninja villages. You may also undertake a plethora of side missions as you see fit. Otherwise, it’s a solid fighting game that enthusiasts can enjoy.

Naruto’s color scheme, youthful energy, and fast-paced matches all make it an appealing candidate for orange-coded games in the rainbow platinum trophy challenge.

Okami HD

Okami HD is a stylish action game in which you play as a wolf trekking across Japan in folk tale fashion. More importantly, you are Amaterasu, the Goddess of the Sun. It is your responsibility to breathe life back into the world following a series of unfortunate events.

Seeing as you are the symbol of the sun, orange is an incredibly fitting color for the game. Although Amaterasu is a well-mannered and quiet heroine, she brings energy into her surroundings and allows the world around her to thrive.

The platinum trophy icon depicts Amaterasu’s wolf form on an unraveling scroll. It makes sense that a game based around the Edo period in Japan would have a memorable form of communication as its final unlockable achievement.

Rocket League

Rocket League is a sports game that combines cars and soccer. To put it simply, it is a team-based game where you control a car in order to ram large balls into the opponent’s goal.

Rocket League is frenetic fun, often with a lot happening at once. It can be difficult to control your vehicle, but since everyone is in the same boat, it adds to the chaos in a pleasant way.

Many players use the in-game chat options to share their sentiments, including “Nice Shot!” and “What a Save!” Hilariously, these are often sarcastic remarks rather than genuine comments. While juvenile, it certainly adds to Rocket League’s youthful charm.

Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage

Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage is another 3D platformer that excels with family-friendly audiences in mind. In this game, you play as Spyro, a spunky adolescent dragon that gets dragged into a world-ending crisis on his way to a well-earned vacation in Dragon Shores. This time, the villain is Ripto, an evil dinosaur that’s just begging to get pranked.

The game is humorous, fun, and energetic. The platinum trophy icon includes Spyro’s distinctive orange flames, somewhat disguising a spooky silhouette of Ripto smirking. It’s menacing, but Spyro’s stance shows that he is confident in rising to the challenge.

Yellow

Yellow is a cheery color that most often brings about feelings of happiness. But that’s not the only thing it can represent! Yellow can also be an effective visual for personal strength, enlightenment, and humor.

Borderlands 3

Borderlands 3 is the most recent mainline entry for Gearbox Software’s flagship series. Like its predecessors, Borderlands 3 focuses more on its jokes than on the central narrative. The featured antagonist twins’ trendy humor often falls flat for many players who don’t keep up with the latest internet memes.

Since these jokes are such a big focus, if you don’t find them funny, a lot of the game’s charm will be lost on you. Even so, it makes a very strong case for being included in the yellow category—either you find it hilarious in its own right, or you can include it as an ironic twist.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is anything but an optimistic tale. The protagonist may come from any one of three distinct lifepaths: Nomad, Street Kid, or Corpo. Regardless of V’s history, all paths lead to the same conundrum: sharing your mind-space with a violent lunatic. Will V retain their autonomy, or will Johnny Silverhand eventually take over?

Despite stark circumstances, Cyberpunk 2077 maintains a healthy amount of humor where it can. There is also a sense of enlightenment that you experience alongside V as you approach the story’s climax.

The platinum trophy icon shows Johnny Silverhand playing a guitar with a wall of records behind him. It’s a nice visualization of the man when he’s not trying to burn down buildings.

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth combines zany antics and grave circumstances into a delightful mix. You play as a teenage detective who investigates crimes and curious happenings in Eden, a futuristic cyberspace filled with digital creatures. Over time, it becomes clear that humanity’s reliance on technology may very well be its downfall.

Besides its comedy, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is also a tale of personal growth. The protagonist becomes a stronger person throughout the game.

The platinum icon for Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth includes a large gilded trophy and everyone’s favorite digital monster, Agumon. His sunny disposition would look great on anyone’s mosaic.

Naughty Bear

Naughty Bear is an eclectic reversal of what you may expect for yellow-themed games. On the surface, it’s a cute video game where teddy bears throw parties. What could be better coded for a happy, family-friendly title?

Don’t be fooled; Naughty Bear is anything but approved for all ages. Naughty has been ridiculed and bullied by the other bears for far too long—so he decides it’s high-time to exact his revenge.

Despite its colorful cast and celebratory levels, the game hinges on violent acts seen through a cartoonish lens. For that reason, despite being quite grim in its execution, the game’s overall tone is silly.

Naughty Bear would make an excellent tongue-in-cheek option for yellow-themed games in the rainbow challenge. The platinum trophy icon resembles the medals earned in-game for high scores, making it an excellent design for such a coveted achievement.

If you want to read more details about trophy hunting in Naughty Bear, I wrote an article covering my experience recently. Be warned, however, that earning its platinum trophy is incredibly difficult!

Persona 4: Dancing All Night

Persona 4: Dancing All Night is a sequel to the original fan-favorite JRPG. It continues the story of our ragtag teenage detectives following the conclusion of the serial murder case in Inaba.

Dancing All Night comes packed with all-new rhythm gameplay and new characters from an idol agency. Yellow is an apt color for the Persona 4 series, given its color palette. Dancing All Night in particular is relaxed fun with relatively low stakes, making it an ideal choice for yellow-themed games. The gameplay is energetic and simple, too.

Spiritfarer

It’s all in the name for Spiritfarer. You play as Stella, a young girl shepherding lost souls to the afterlife. The game has themes around grief, but it’s not all doom and gloom. Rather, Spirtifarer approaches death with a more positive outlook, reframing it less as a definitive end to one’s existence and more as a start of a new chapter. It is an enlightening journey, especially once you learn the motivation behind why Stella helps others. It can be comforting for players who are experiencing loss in their own lives.

The platinum icon for Spiritfarer reveals its identity as a cozy game. Pictured is Susan, a frequently miffed walrus who runs a museum. You often interact with her while completing your objectives in the game. It’s cathartic to see her pleased, rather than her normally negative demeanor.

Did I mention that Spiritfarer also has a cat named Daffodil, whose fur is a beautiful shade of yellow?

Tales of Berseria

I’d be remiss not to include my favorite video game series somewhere on this list. Tales of Berseria was released worldwide in 2017. It is an emotional story about a teenage girl seeking revenge following a tragedy that occurred in her village.

There is some levity in the party’s interactions with one another, but overall the game is serious in its tone. Velvet undergoes a great deal of personal growth throughout her journey, with her motivations shifting from that of hatred into love.

For that reason, the platinum trophy icon being Velvet herself is meaningful. Tales of Berseria is her story, and this icon unequivocally shows her growth as a person. Rather than being damaged goods, she gained something valuable in the process.

Wolfenstein: The New Order

Wolfenstein: The New Order continues the series’ trend of non-stop action against terrorists. It certainly fits yellow’s themes due to the inherent power struggle between opposing factions and its upbeat gameplay.

The platinum trophy icon satirizes historical extremist symbols, including the Parteiadler eagle and SS bolts from the German Nazi Party in the 1940s.

Green

As a symbol, green has fairly obvious connotations. It represents nature, luck, innovation, greed and corruption. Often, the shade of green can tell you a lot about its underlying context.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is a story-driven visual novel game with strategic action segments. You switch perspectives between a varied cast of pilots, people who can control large mechanical titans. This skill is a significant boon given the fact that cities are currently being overrun by malevolent forces.

The platinum trophy icon appears to be a circuit board with a crown, reminiscent of the developer Vanillaware’s logo. Although a fixation on technology is technically an inversion of green’s more natural themes, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim still fits the mold thanks to its focus on innovation.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was the 2020 iteration of Ubisoft’s popular stealth action franchise. As the name suggests, you play as a Viking during the 9th century AD. This was a period of expansion and conquest for the Vikings as they began exploring Europe in earnest.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla thrives when viewed from that historical perspective, as the narrative centers around a Viking leader claiming further territory for their clan.

Political intrigue in the game makes you realize that, despite such beautiful landscapes, corruption runs rampant in this world. The platinum trophy icon combines nature and man in a similar commentary via the eagle being ensnared by threads.

Doom Eternal

Doom Eternal is a lot like Wolfenstein, an earlier entry in this article. To Doom Eternal’s credit, it is intense action leveled against hellish demons, not terrorists. Given the setting and the fact that demons are prone to sin, a clear argument can be made for its inclusion as a green-coded game. Greed and corruption are easy to point toward in Doom Eternal’s universe.

The platinum icon reminds me of the collectible figures from Doom 2016. There is also a hand gesture above the doll that resembles the “Rock On!” hand sign or the Sign of the Horns. Again, Doom Eternal’s setting adds another layer to this gesture’s inclusion in the platinum image.

Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty

Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty fits green themes to a tee. You play as a Mudokon, a low-level worker in a factory. Although Abe has always been aware of the bosses’ greed, it was never made more clear than when he learned that they planned to use the workers as a key ingredient in their next food product!

Blatant consumerism and corruption are significant themes in this title. Additionally, the platinum trophy icon looks strikingly similar to the TV screens used to convey vital information in-game. The use of technology in Oddworld’s universe also adds more credence to its inclusion in our green category.

Returnal

In Returnal, you are trapped in a time loop. It is a roguelike third-person shooter in a sci-fi environment in which each death sees you return to your starting point.

The Ouroboros in the platinum trophy icon is symbolic of the player’s experience; they must undergo familiar gameplay segments repeatedly until they succeed. Decent runs require a lot of luck regarding room spawns, loot drops, and enemy placements as well.

The Sims 3

The Sims is a video game that even most non-gamers have heard of at some point. It is a life simulation game where you control one or more characters as they go through all stages of life: child, teenager, adult, and elder. You must balance managing your characters’ responsibilities with their personal needs. It is very much a go-at-your-own-pace kind of game, providing players with a large amount of freedom.

The platinum trophy icon is the iconic green diamond that is always present above a sim’s head. This diamond represents their overall mood, with green indicating a positive outlook.

The Walking Dead Collection

Experience the majority of Telltale’s The Walking Dead series in the collection pack, featuring the first three seasons. You play as Lee, a former university professor down on his luck. When the zombie apocalypse begins, he’s in the back of a police car.

In a way, these horrible events have given him a new lease on life. With newfound freedom in a broken world, he finds some comfort in protecting a little girl from experiencing many of the horrors he deals with on a daily basis. In the sequels, you see the little girl, Clementine, grow up.

The platinum trophy image shows a crawling zombie with a green background. Rather than highlighting thriving life, this represents a different side of the natural world: decay. In that sense, The Walking Dead is a perfect game to represent green themes.

Yooka-Laylee

Yooka-Laylee is the most whimsical offering in our green category. It is a 3D platformer and spiritual successor to the now-retro Banjo-Kazooie games. Dual protagonists Yooka (the chameleon) and Laylee (the bat) work together to defeat the dastardly CEO Capital B from his evil schemes.

The platinum trophy icon highlights the game’s conflict. Capital B’s corruption and greed are readily apparent and well-contrasted against the more natural look of Yooka and Laylee in a prospering environment.

Blue

Blue is a popular choice for a person’s favorite color. It’s not too surprising; its gentle shades can be viewed as relaxing and low-intensity. That’s why blue often represents big-ticket traits like reliability, wisdom, and loyalty—all character attributes that make us feel safe around others. However, it can also have negative connotations. Blue can also be used to depict sadness, coldness, and solemnity.

Astro’s Playroom

Astro’s Playroom is a short and sweet 3D platformer that celebrates PlayStation’s history. You play as the titular character Astro Bot as he explores colorful diorama-like levels inside a PlayStation 5 console.

The game’s platinum trophy icon shows Astro Bot happily waving amidst a sea of iconic PlayStation button symbols. Closer inspection reveals the entire image to be a computer chip, which is a fun homage to Astro Playroom’s frequent references to gaming technology.

The game’s focus on PlayStation’s legacy provides a sense of reliability and its plentiful easter eggs are a bonus for loyal fans. It is also worth pointing out that PlayStation’s logo is primarily blue, making this mascot character an easy pick for the blue section of the rainbow platinum trophy challenge.

Destiny

Destiny was a new IP released early in the PlayStation 4’s life cycle. It was a sci-fi first-person looter-shooter from the original developers behind Xbox’s flagship franchise, Halo. Although Destiny did not receive many expansions, its 2017 sequel continues to receive support with new content updates to this day.

In Destiny, you are a Guardian: a bearer of light that must protect the Traveler and its denizens from harm, lest the world fall to ruin. In practice, the game involves single-player and multiplayer components, including competitive and cooperative modes alike. Earning all its trophies will require a high level of coordination and skill as you must complete nearly all possible content in the process. That includes endgame raids requiring 6 players each!

The platinum trophy image is fairly complex. At a glance, it seems as though it’s just a blue blur with radiating lines and circles. However, I’d argue that there is a deeper meaning behind these elements.

The Traveler is an enormous spherical entity that is revered by Guardians for its godlike power and altruistic nature. The central, filled circle in the platinum icon might represent the Traveler, with the many diverging lines showing its influence on humanity much like rays of sunshine.

The overlapping circles surrounding the Traveler are a common motif in artistic expression. They usually indicate balance and order. In Destiny’s case, this fits its theme regarding the power struggle between light and darkness.

Lastly, the image seems to be surrounded by a laurel wreath or wings. This might speak to further reverence for the Traveler, or perhaps the Guardians’ role in protecting it. Of course, Destiny’s iconic logo is present as well.

The Traveler’s wisdom and the Guardians’ loyalty to its light are both perfect matches for blue-coded themes. Destiny’s reputation as being incredibly challenging for completionists makes it a prestigious platinum trophy to add to any collection.

Melty Blood: Type Lumina

Melty Blood: Type Lumina is a 2D fighting game set in the Tsukihime universe. Although its story can be unapproachable to newcomers, its gameplay is a must-try for enthusiasts of the genre.

When I first started playing Melty Blood: Type Lumina, I feared not being skilled enough to earn all of its trophies. However, I discovered that there was an easier and more consistent strategy for its most difficult achievements. If you’re interested in learning more, I discuss it in further detail in my article about unexpected exploits and glitches that made trophies easier.

It’s not a secret that the moon plays an important role in Melty Blood: Type Lumina. Players have access to a suite of powerful moves named Moon Skills. They can also trigger Moon Drive, a temporary power boost. The universe also features vampire-like characters whose abilities can be impacted by the stages of the moon. So, it’s no surprise that the platinum trophy icon includes one overlooking a blue backdrop!

Melty Blood: Type Lumina makes a strong case for the more negative connotation of blue themes. Many villainous characters act predictably evil; more notable is the fact that many heroic characters can also be cold toward other members of the cast, including their own family. I’m not familiar with the overarching story, but it seems as though there are sad undertones as well.

Slime Rancher

Slime Rancher brings us back to a more positive light. It is a cozy adventure game in which you find and care for colorful slime creatures! It’s always satisfying to suck up a new species of slime using your vacuum-like gadget, the Vacpack.

Trophy hunters have little to fear in this title. The most troubling trophy requires reaching a high score in Rush Mode. Although the time limit and constraints of the mode seem scary, good RNG and planning make quick work of it.

The platinum trophy icon for Slime Rancher appears to be a lucky slime bouncing with joy. The game’s relaxing gameplay fits right at home with blue’s more serene interpretation.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a game that requires little introduction. It is a continuation of the original game’s story with a smaller scope. The game follows a rookie Spider-Man as he learns more about his powers and what it takes to be a superhero. One thing always hurts, though: you can’t save everyone.

The platinum trophy icon is a classic Spider-Man logo plastered over a trophy. Its design is reminiscent of the game’s user interface as well as Miles’ unique electric powers. The blue hue matches Spider-Man’s role in providing stability to New York City amidst so much turmoil.

Steins;Gate Elite

Steins;Gate Elite is a visual novel revolving around time travel that poses a deep narrative fans swear by. Its platinum trophy icon matches its stellar reputation, too. It includes a blue gear encircled by an arrow. This represents the dual nature of time travel, seeing as you may go forward or backward with no definitive terminal point.

Additionally, the inclusion of “OSHMKUFA” is in homage to the cast’s last names. This sentimentality adds to Steins;Gate Elite’s frequently depressing narrative. Also, the fact that these university students developed time travel technology speaks to their intelligence—yet another tie to blue-coded themes.

Undertale

Undertale was an internet sensation when it was released in 2015. It’s an independently developed roleplaying game that turned several tropes common in the genre on their head. You play as a human that has fallen into the world of monsters. How far will you go to find a way home?

The platinum trophy icon features the Annoying Dog with a set of cool sunglasses. In a silly twist, Undertale’s creator Toby Fox uses this character as a representation of himself. For trophy hunters, the dog’s name is apt.

Undertale’s trophies are almost completely dominated by one task: donating gold to the Dog Shrine. 15 trophies can be earned by donating various amounts of money to the Annoying Dog… one coin at a time. Get ready to mash X 350+ times to earn these trophies!

If we bend the prescribed definition of “coldness,” you could say that the Annoying Dog’s look in the platinum trophy icon has an air of coolness. If that’s not enough to qualify its status as a “blue” game, the overall plot can also often surprise players with its dark tone and depressing themes.

Unravel 2

Unravel 2 is a 2-player co-op platforming game in which you and a partner control yarn dolls. They are connected by a string, so good communication is a must to succeed! The narrative takes a backseat to the gameplay, but several in-game events can be fairly distressing and sad to witness. Although you play as small yarn dolls, there are human people in the background of your adventure going through their lives.

The platinum trophy design is simple, yet elegant. It perfectly captures Unravel 2’s understated and impactful themes. The white specks evoke an image of a night sky, which would be right at home with the beautiful environments in the game.

Unravel 2 is solemn and sad in some ways, but it still maintains an air of optimism. Unlocking the platinum trophy is incredibly difficult, too, so be prepared for some depressing nights of failed speedruns and no-damage challenges (yes—those are required!).

Indigo

Indigo is an in-between color that combines aspects of both blue and violet. As such, it carries similar themes, but with less stringence. While many people might find its inclusion in the rainbow unnecessary, it adds an interesting twist to several games’ themes that wouldn’t be adequately covered in any other color.

In color theory, indigo can represent intuition, integrity, and creativity. In equal measure, it may also symbolize egoism, indecisiveness, and imbalance. How well do these 8 games match indigo’s transitory themes?

Crypt of the Necrodancer

Crypt of the Necrodancer is one of the most difficult games to earn a platinum trophy in. It combines rhythm gameplay with roguelike mechanics. To be one of only 30 platinum achievers (0.09% of all players) or 20 full completionists (0.06% of all players), you must be incredibly gifted and tenacious. Your intuition to match the beat must be unmatched. Being too indecisive in your movements will lead to a failed run, of which there will be many.

Do you have what it takes to earn such a coveted trophy?

Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE Plus

Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE Plus is the 2024 port of an original Nintendo Switch title from the minds of Danganronpa developers Spike Chunsoft and the recently formed Too Kyo Games.

The game is a new spin on the whodunnit mysteries that we’ve all come to expect from teenage murder mystery visual novels. In Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE Plus, you play as an amnesiac detective in the seedy underbelly of Kanai Ward, a rainy city completely isolated from the rest of the world. You must solve crimes with the help of your Death God companion, Shinigami. Her powers enable you to reconstruct crime scenes and explore maze-like labyrinths that physically manifest mysteries.

Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE Plus is a fun, albeit flawed, experience. It is always raining in Kanai Ward, resulting in the world’s environment frequently being cast in familiar shades of blue and purple. Intuition is necessary for detectives solving cases. However, as a rookie, the protagonist often waffles on how he should proceed through an investigation. This indecisiveness displays indigo themes. Additionally, Shinigami’s irreverent attitude and self-serving nature evoke a sense of egoism.

The platinum trophy icon includes a portrait of Shinigami smiling, adorned with clouds, gears, and a wispy border. The gears are indicative of a person’s train of thought, an action players frequently observe in this game. The clouds likely represent the weather crisis in Kanai Ward. It may also have a more literary interpretation as detectives must see through any ruse (an overcast sky filled with clouds) to find the truth (the sun).

Additionally, the wispy border could represent a physical manifestation of a soul, the likes of which Shinigami frequently reaps. The indigo backdrop speaks to both the logical deduction side of the game as well as the permanence of death.

Omori

In Omori, not all is as it seems. You explore Headspace, a colorful world filled with adventure and uncanny circumstances. Accompanied by friends, you will engage in turn-based RPG mechanics while helping the creatures that call this place home. Underneath this pleasant and cheery world, however, lies a terrible secret.

It’s difficult to describe how Omori fits indigo’s transient themes without approaching spoiler-filled territory for those who haven’t experienced its glamor for themselves. The gorgeous world of Headspace is incredibly creative in its design and underlying meaning. Additionally, late story details relying on the player’s choices highlight a severe imbalance in the protagonist’s life. If you want to know more, you’ll have to play the game to find out!

The platinum trophy icon shows the party posing for a picture inside of Headspace. Centered in the photo is Basil, a character who does not accompany the party but instead plays a significant role in the story.

The fact that the group is posing for a picture is corroborated by one of Basil’s favorite hobbies: snapshotting memories of their friends in their photo album.

Also pictured in the top left of the photo is Mari, the protagonist’s older sister who also does not participate in battles, but instead supports the party. This bittersweet image is the perfect way to cap off your experience in such a fun and thought-provoking game.

Oxenfree II: Lost Signals

Oxenfree II: Lost Signals continues the mystery of Edwards Island 5 years after the events of the first title. You play as Riley, a researcher investigating strange radio signals being emitted on the island. While exploring, you quickly discover that these abnormalities are the result of a supernatural occurrence. Will you be able to change your fate?

The platinum trophy icon is rather simple: a badge with a trophy and some stars on it. The plot follows indigo-coded themes as the player must use their intuition to uncover Edwards Islands’ many mysteries.

Furthermore, the game tests your integrity as several different endings depend on the choices you make. What happens to Riley and the other inhabitants of the island depends on how you approach the looming crisis.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is the newest entry in the long-running series by the same name. This title is unique in that it introduced a brand-new playable character: Rivet, another Lombax (from a different dimension!). Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a third-person shooter that allows a great deal of creativity in player loadouts. There are a vast number of gadgets and weapons that you can unlock while on your heroic adventure.

The platinum trophy image is a trophy surrounded by several different weapons, speaking to the freedom afforded to players in customizing their gameplay experience. The purple circle is likely a portal, since they appear frequently within the game. As heroes, Ratchet and Clank both act with the utmost integrity during their adventures.

RWBY: Arrowfell

RWBY: Arrowfell is a short Metroidvania title that shares the story of what Team RWBY got up to in Atlus during the events of Volume 7 of the animated series. In Remnant, heroes with powers called semblances fight against the forces of evil to stop them from destroying the world. These Huntresses fend off Grimm, creatures that feed on fear. In Arrowfell, you get to play as the four lead characters of the series as they undergo further training in an icy climate.

The overall plot includes a conspiracy within the ranks of the Atlus military. Egotistical villains appear frequently for our favorite heroes to dispatch. Also, Hunters and Huntresses must use their abilities to protect the public in earnest.

The platinum trophy icon for RWBY: Arrowfell shows an official Huntress license, the likes of which Team RWBY has always aspired to earn. It is the very symbol of integrity within their universe, thus making it a fitting option for indigo-themed games.

The Walking Dead: The Final Season

The Walking Dead: The Final Season is the last entry in the Telltale series discussed earlier for green-coded titles. The Final Season sees the conclusion of Clementine’s story as she looks for a place to call home long-term.

Given the choice-based nature of gameplay, The Walking Dead: The Final Season frequently punishes players for their inaction. Clementine’s relationship with AJ, her adolescent ward, can at times be rather imbalanced. The boy often tries to protect her despite his young age.

The platinum trophy icon shows an older Clementine with an indigo backdrop. She is expressionless, almost as if to obfuscate whether or not the game ends in tragedy. This again points to the player having agency over in-game decisions.

TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge

TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is a love letter to retro side-scrolling beat-em-ups. You play as a diverse cast of characters from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoons, including the 4 turtle brothers, their rat father Master Splinter, and their two human friends: Casey Jones and April O’Neil. Later DLC introduced additional characters for players to enjoy. The plot is reminiscent of old cartoon episodes; the Shredder is up to something and you’ve got to stop him!

At first glance, indigo doesn’t seem like the best choice for a TMNT game. After all, the series is well-known for its humor (at least, outside of the comics). However, the fact that the primary cast members are ninjas adds some important distinctions to consider.

The turtles must have proper intuition and act decisively to win fights. Acting stealthily as ninjas necessitates letting go of one’s ego. Lastly, the turtles stand for justice, another key tenet of indigo.

The platinum trophy icon shows Master Splinter meditating with a purple background. During gameplay, emoting like this is how a player can increase their power meter to unleash radical moves. The composition and pose capture both mindfulness and the rejection of egoism.

Violet

Violet is a blend of red and blue, often resulting in a light purple or pink tone. Since the iconic 7-color rainbow doesn’t include pink in its own right, I’ve stretched the definition of violet slightly to allow more variance in its shade. Don’t worry, though; these games still represent violet’s intrinsic messaging quite well.

As a color, violet is often associated with etherealism, spirituality, and compassion. Going too far with these traits can also lead to escapism and detachment.

Catherine: Full Body

Catherine: Full Body perfectly ticks all the boxes for violet themes. Catherine: Full Body tells the story of Vincent Brooks, a man in his 30s who is at a crossroads in life. Should he get serious with his girlfriend, or enjoy the single life while he can? The stakes are higher than ever since men across the country are dying in their sleep in unusual circumstances.

The game includes puzzle-solving platforming sections in an otherworldly location every night. When Vincent goes to sleep, he must scale immense towers successfully to prevent his untimely death. The existence of this other world, gods, demons, and aliens all point to an element of spirituality, too.

Vincent’s conflicting desires lead to him drowning his woes in alcohol, a common coping mechanism. Additionally, having multiple women show romantic interest in Vincent means there might be illicit love affairs or nights of passion.

The platinum trophy icon displays all three of Vincent’s love interests. Depending on what type of life he chooses for himself, he may pursue any one of them. The game also includes a great deal of variety in its routing including good, bad, and neutral endings for each pairing.

Danganronpa 1-2 Reload

Danganronpa 1-2 Reload, like Detective Archives: RAIN CODE Plus, is a murder mystery title. The inner machinations of the Danganronpa universe frequently slip into absurdism, lending credence to an ethereal experience. In some cases, the events in-game are literally detached from reality. Although many murders are planned, some are crimes of passion.

For these reasons, Danganronpa makes a great case to be included in the violet category. It also helps that the platinum trophy icon includes a shade of light purple around the mascot character Monokuma’s body.

Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!

Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! is a visual novel game with a twist. You join your high school’s literature club at the behest of your childhood friend. To your surprise, the club is filled with beautiful girls! Write poems and try to find love in this quirky title. Be warned, however, that not everything is sunshine and rainbows…

Interactions between the various characters reveal their compassion for one another, especially in the additional side story content. Date events and romantic undertones also occur throughout the game.

By the end of your experience, you will come to learn that the game fits the surrealism factor too. Although the platinum trophy icon is simply a pink trophy, Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! is a must-try game for those not sensitive to mature content.

Little Noah: Scion of Paradise

Little Noah: Scion of Paradise is a hidden gem of a monster-catching Metroidvania. You explore ancient ruins alongside a brusque cat to learn more about your missing father’s whereabouts.

The gameplay is highly varied as the loot, companion monsters, and bosses all change every single time you enter the ruins. That makes each run unique! If you want to know more about what trophy hunting in this cute title is like, check out my write-up about my platinum trophy journey in Little Noah: Scion of Paradise here.

Throughout the game, Noah becomes closer to the snippy cat, Zipper. Also, her underlying motivation about finding her father adds to her compassionate character. When you learn more about Little Noah’s world, you realize there is an element of ethereal intrigue to boot.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy

The Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy is a collection of games following the rise of newly licensed defense attorney Phoenix Wright as he fights tooth and nail on behalf of his clients in court. Experience both sad tales and comedic stories alike, but watch out: the cases can often be connected in unexpected ways!

The most important trait a defense attorney can have is to always believe in their client. Phoenix Wright exemplifies this trait to a fault, highlighting his compassionate nature. The games also have a supernatural element as Phoenix is frequently accompanied by spirit mediums that can summon deceased individuals for brief periods of time.

The platinum trophy image shows the iconic courtroom setting. In the foreground are the scales of justice: the symbol of the lawyer profession and a cogent reminder of the need for a fair and balanced trial to reach the truth.

Poison Control

Poison Control is a unique action game in which you delve into Hell! More specifically, you free lost souls from their regrets in life, in the hopes that you will eventually be able to escape yourself. The gameplay involves shooting different types of poison at enemies and puzzle mechanics in which you can draw circles to remove the enemy’s poison.

The story includes several twists with depressing implications. Several characters have close friendships with each other, including the playable character and their Poisonette companion.

The ethereal nature of the various hellish levels, intimate relationships between characters, and the villain becoming detached from reality are all important elements of Poison Control that add to its violet-coded themes.

The platinum trophy icon shows the protagonist and Poisonette together, exploring one of the numerous Hell stages. On the left side is a red flower resembling the iconic red spider lily. These flowers symbolize death and the afterlife, both of which are significant themes in Poison Control.

Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley is a cozy farming simulation game. The playable character has been worn down by their corporate job and decides to move to a remote village for a change of pace. Build up your farm with whichever crops you desire, descend into dungeons, and make friends with the townsfolk!

This title also includes several spiritual elements. Magic users can teleport and perform various spells. There are also the Junimo, tiny creatures that help you with your objectives that the average person cannot see. You may also have run-ins with a witch or a fairy that can affect your crops. The latest update also added a lot of new content, including a raccoon family that you can interact with.

Relationship-building mechanics, Stardew Valley’s whimsical world, and the playable character’s desire to escape their soulless job make it a great candidate for violet-themed games in the rainbow platinum trophy challenge.

The platinum trophy icon is a Stardrop, a consumable item in the game that grants you immense power. You usually unlock these by completing important or difficult tasks. It is a neat detail that by earning Stardew Valley’s platinum trophy, you have found the very last Stardrop! Your mind is filled with thoughts of your favorite things.

Conclusion

The rainbow platinum trophy challenge is a less intense challenge for those looking to spice up their trophy hunting efforts. It can be a lot of fun to critically analyze the platinum trophy icons for games you’ve completed as well as ones you’re interested in going for in the future.
